Rime (Square Peg Contemporary Circus)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

That’s it; I’m running away to join the contemporary circus. ‘Rime’ is modern, slick and achingly sleek. Based on Coleridge’s poem ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, the show whisks us aboard a boat for an acrobatic journey on the open sea. Using the mast to demonstrate skills of balance, or a rope to tumble in a beautiful wreck on the floor, the cast never miss an opportunity to exploit the maritime theme. The poem felt like it was restricting Square Peg Contemporary Circus at points, meaning comic bursts were too few and far between and that the set-pieces were fragmented. It fell just – just – short of awe, but shows true promise for the future of cirque nouveau.
