Rambling In An Empty Room (Chien Tzu-Ting, Huang Ching-Yu / The Key Physical Theatre)

It’s always interesting to see how East Asian performers interpret physical theatre, especially the young generation; the make-up and hair aim at a cute and doll-like effect, yet this is confusing alongside dramatic physical movements. I don’t find anything physically appealing here, although the dancers are trying very hard to lift and roll, and unfortunately the lighting is not adjusted to highlight the physicality or the delicacy of the movements. It is daring of this cast to take off their dresses and throw them from under the sheet in a seductive gesture, however, when they bow to the audience, they shyly pull up the sheet to cover the bodies. Cute smiles appear on the cute doll-like faces again.
