Minu1s (JMUpstart Dance Company)
By Lucinda Al-Zoghbi | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
With their high ponytails and leotards, the five female performers certainly look like dancers. Unfortunately what follows is stagnant, movement for movement’s sake dancing – the worst kind. Thankfully the scene changes, as do the costumes (several times throughout the piece), and that’s where things start to get slightly more interesting. They look like misfit runway models, as they tug and pull on their shirts and heels before restlessly strutting up and down their confined catwalk strip of light. With colourful dresses come colourful dynamics; shifting through space they are a bustling energetic presence. Throughout the piece the facial expressions suggest moments of inquisition, and later, playfulness too, but these emotions are non committal and, as a result, unconvincing.
