ED2012 4/5 Reviews ED2012 Dance & Physical Theatre Reviews
Hora (Edinburgh International Festival / Batsheva Dance Company)
By Charlotte Ryan | Published on Saturday 1 September 2012
Another visually stunning and innovative production from Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company, creators of 2009’s hit ‘Decadance’. Ill-timed protests interrupted this opening performance, but did not succeed in detracting from the atmosphere and if anything spurred the performers on to an even more passionate display of their talents. Against a simple green backdrop, dancers clad in black performed classical ballet choreography with a modern, alien twist. Performing to a beautifully arranged soundtrack which included music from ‘2001:A Space Odyssey’ and the ‘Star Wars’ theme, this accomplished ensemble company used their bodies to great effect in a variety of expertly choreographed pieces, with one particularly striking segment performed in complete silence. Hypnotic and daring, this is a must-see for dance-lovers and novices alike.
Edinburgh Playhouse, 30 Aug-1 Sep, 7.30pm.
