ED2012 5/5 Reviews ED2012 Dance & Physical Theatre Reviews
Cinderella (Edinburgh International Festival / Mariinsky Ballet)
By Kirsten Waller | Published on Saturday 1 September 2012
There’s no avoiding it – sometimes reviewing is too much fun to feel like work; and watching the Mariinsky Ballet perform one of Prokofiev’s most celebrated works is such an occasion. Each dancer inhabits their character like second skin, captivating and amusing in equal measure. The staging is gorgeous, a punky Russian fairy tale; a riot of colour envelopes the production, with the ball scene in particular a sophisticated pageant of oranges, reds and maroon (with a splash of white for Cinderella and the Prince). The choreography is a spectacular mixture of the classic and the inventive – I spotted something very like moves from Thriller – and there are sections where the corps de ballet move sideways, like cautious crabs, as well arabesques, pirouettes and romantic lifts. Utterly enchanting.
