Spring Awakening – A New Musical (Captivate Drama)

A heady tale of passion, depression and puberty in Germany, with rousing rock songs, a cast that clearly enjoyed themselves, and a set that worked perfectly (apart from the over enthusiastic fog machine). There were impressive vocals from all the cast and overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable performance. Banned in Germany when first written for tackling sensitive subject matter such as homosexuality, rape, incest, abortion and suicide, ‘Spring Awakening’ has lost none of it’s shock value, or its clever wit and lyrics. Although it was sometimes hard to interpret the complicated German names though their accents, leading to some loss of understanding of the finer plot points, the audience seemed enraptured and gave the performance a standing ovation.
