Opera Scenes (Edinburgh Studio Opera)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
This compilation of opera songs and scenes works well partly because of how accessible it is, using some of the form’s most famous songs so that it’s inclusive enough to entertain people who know nothing about opera. It’s also cleverly arranged and manages to have a slightly cohesive narrative running throughout. The singing itself is extraordinary, especially since it’s performed in a tent – not designed to reflect and amplify the sound like an opera house – and alongside the amazing vocals, the highly competent acting conveys a real sense of the characters being portrayed; it’s these factors, along with the aforementioned rough narrative, that can do so much to involve the audience. It’s a good length, and it’s a perfect introduction to the genre.
