Julius Caesar – Losing Your Head in Egypt (Philhomoniker – Munich Gay Men’s Choir)
By Hannah Sweetnam | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
The Munich Gay Men’s Choir present condensed highlights of Handel’s German opera ‘Julius Caesar’ to a largely clueless audience. Clad in short dungarees and smiles, the cast were very entertaining, portraying with pizazz a number of different characters, and even Cleopatra! The choir astounded with their baroque numbers, which were beautifully vocalised and musically ambitious, and compensated well for the humour that got lost in the foreign language script. However, serious concentration is required in order to follow the tale and I’d have to advise potential punters to attend this musical only if they already know a little of Caesar’s story. On the up side, short intervals were added to explain the scenes in English via projections, and this helped to turn what could be an inexplicable shambles into a ramshackle theatrical vision.
