Hamlet! The Musical (Wellington College)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Monday 20 August 2012
Shakespearean musicals are common because they’re ridiculous. But unlike some, this one manages to deliver on the concept’s promise with great singing and writing, and actually demonstrating a proper understanding of what it needed to achieve. The songs were funny, and amazingly, catchy, and performances generally strong. Deserving particular mention was the actress playing Gertrude, but there were no bad, or even mediocre, performances. Aside from that the depth of the parody here was impressive – this was written by someone who understands both Shakespeare and musicals, directly parodying the genre’s tropes and adopting the typical types of songs found. The only problem was the volume in places; it could be difficult to hear the words, and with lyrics as funny as these, that’s a shame.
