ED2012 2/5 Reviews ED2012 Musical Reviews
Armada (Old Hall Theatre / YMTC)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
A musical about John Dee, Elizabeth I and that attempted Spanish invasion, ‘Armada’ felt slightly unsatisfying. It’s not a terrible show, but you just felt it could have been better: wider in scope, a bit funnier and with more polished performances. The problem was basically down to underlying story problems; rather than focusing on the far more interesting history, the musical chose to put the emphasis on a bland, love story sub-plot, which felt a little shoehorned in, and while this did give them the opportunity to spoof some of the typical romantic musical clichés, it severely limited what else the company could do. Even taking the element of parody into consideration, it was hard to tell sometimes if they were sincere or not. Yet despite all this, ‘Armada’ was pretty well-acted, and at times good fun too.
