And They Played Shang-A-Lang (Craft Theatre Company)

Labelling nostalgic shows as bad is not – as this show proves – always fair. A story of Scottish childhood within a reflection on ageing, with in a girl mourning her Uncle, it’s surprisingly sophisticated for a jukebox musical. The singing too is high quality, and there are some interesting covers, in particular, a very good ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Unfortunately, the songs are also a bit distracting, not because they aren’t good, but because they sometimes feel a little like they’ve been forced into the show, leaving the narrative lightly difficult to connect to. It can also tend towards sentimentality, though given the subject matter that’s not surprising, and perhaps to be desired. Overall, it’s a successful piece.
