The Oxford Gargoyles – Jazz A Cappella!
By Ellie Willis | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
The Oxford Gargoyles’ performance was like High School Musical with jazz hands. Incredibly cheesy expressions and choreography, tired songs, and an abundance of theatrics made this performance somewhat difficult to watch. Additionally, the ensemble as a whole sounded somewhat off pitch: the female singers too sharp while the male vocals flat. Individually most of the singers were very talented in solos, but as collaboration it just didn’t fit together well. As for being advertised as a jazz ensemble, that too was misrepresented as most of the songs that they did weren’t of the jazz persuasion, or even adapted to be, save for adding in abysmal scat battles. A shame, as the singers themselves have talent, it just isn’t used well.
