The Outside Track (Outside Track)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
It’s hard to dislike a band that performs a song called ‘Reel for the Cramped Arse cheek.’ International five piece Outside Track combine Irish, Scottish and Canadian folk music to produce a sound that’s traditional but also decidedly modern. Poppy hooks and rumbling bass lines plucked from a harp rise over swirling fiddles and flutes, while singer Norah Rendell’s voice carries clearly through rich, full harmonies. If they spend a little too long on anecdotes, the set itself is tight and varied. Tunes like the beautiful, elegiac ‘Fishcakes’ contrast pleasantly with high tempo jigs while the band, full of energy, play, yelp, and spring into spontaneous Irish dancing. Their verve and vitality makes for some lively, lovely tracks.
