Shooglenifty (Shooglenifty / The Famous Spiegeltent)
By Lewis Wade | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
My pre-conceived expectation of this show was of an interesting, but awkward, genre-bending performance. How wrong I was. Shooglenifty may have an original style, but it isn’t so far removed as to make it inaccessible. In fact, the complete opposite is true; within five minutes the crowd were dancing and there was no turning back. Disco funk, afrobeat polyrhythms, rock ‘n’ roll; no style is safe from the infectious folk-tinged melodies that Shooglenifty were able to manipulate and disperse. All praise aside, the show could have benefited from a longer set and a later start time; a mere hour in the early evening was not enough time (nor the best time) to really get into the funkadelic groove this band creates.
The Famous Spiegeltent, 1-12 Aug, 6.30pm.
