Nick Pynn With Kate Daisy Grant (Nick Pynn)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

A tiny, candlelit attic space in Edinburgh’s West End has been crammed with instruments. Guitar, violin, piano and cello sit beside a clutter of bells, musical toys and a home-made Theremin. It might seem unnecessary, but once Nick Pynn starts playing, it’s clear why this ambitious, playful composer needs all that equipment. Frantically switching instruments mid song, he’s accompanied by the equally talented Kate Daisy Grant, and by a host of samples and delay effects which help build up tension and texture. The sound is unclassifiable, like simultaneously listening to folk music, a Danny Elfman score and a spaghetti Western theme. A set of eccentric experiments pulled off with virtuoso verve, this is bewildering, brilliant and curiously beautiful.
