Minfulmess (Rich Batsford)
By Ellie Willis | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Rich Batsford’s performance was one of peaceful contemplation. His compositions were artfully performed and sophisticated, serenading the audience with a style resembling Yann Tiersen. Unfortunately, Batsford’s lyricism was not as advanced and while he had a nice voice, his pitch wasn’t always on par either, thus creating an unpleasant juxtaposition. The music therefore seemed almost tainted by the lyrics and somewhat mismatched melodies, and for some reason, the melodies of the piano music and the sung notes clashed, creating distorted compositions. It was a shame because Batsford’s musical arrangements were so delicate and graceful and were made less superior by the addition of words; the music would have been better standing alone and speaking for itself.
