Magdalena Reising – Blue Cafe Jazz
By Veronika Kallus | Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012
Despite a haunting, velvety, sometimes even raunchy voice and interesting harp play, and despite very skilled double bass and piano players, this performance was not thoroughly enjoyable. Songs in Polish and French created a dreamy, melancholy and away-from-everything atmosphere, but as soon as the language switched to English, the flaws became painfully obvious. Maybe I’m a very lyrics focused person, but the little stories and self-written songs brought the great musical skills down to quite a kitsch level. Interpretations of some Burns poems and other well-known songs did the originals no justice whatsoever. Enjoyment of this show will very much depend on what jazz connoisseurs are looking for – the music or the lyrical content.
The Jazz Bar, 10-18 Aug, 7.00pm.
