From Broadway To Hollywood – A Tribute To George And Ira Gershwin (Pam Lawson accompanied by Tom Finlay, Phil O’Malley, Ed Kelly, Jordie Gilmour)
By Ellie Willis | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Prepare to be transported back in time to a piano bar circa 1954 for an hour of smooth jazz tunes from the Gershwin brothers. Pam Lawson’s sultry attitude paired with her Monroe-esque vocals creates a lovely heart-warming performance of her favourite Gershwin classics, including some of their lesser-known tunes. Flirting with her bashful bandmates and waltzing off to the side during trombone or piano solos, Lawson exemplifies the freedom of jazz performance with a modern sense of humour. Though certainly very enjoyable to watch, the trained ear could detect a few pitch issues in Lawson’s delivery, but overall she and her band provide an absolutely charming show that even those who don’t normally opt for jazz can appreciate.
