Fred Astaire And Ginger Rogers – A Celebration In Song (Pam Lawson)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Saturday 11 August 2012
When Pam Lawson begins her act by proving she really can’t tap dance, you’ll think there may be trouble ahead. This show is all about the music, though, specifically the music of dance duo Astaire and Rogers. You might surprise yourself by knowing more than the theme from ‘Morecambe and Wise,’ too. Lawson has a sweet, bright voice, and if she lacks the range to really smoulder, she compensates with endearing enthusiasm and an obvious love for the subjects. Local legend Tom Finaly offers able accompaniment on piano, while bassist Ed Kelly remains unobtrusive until a blistering, show stealing solo, appropriately enough on ‘Slap That Bass.’ If you’re looking for some old time Hollywood nostalgia, you won’t go far wrong.
Sweet Grassmarket, 3-9 Aug, 2.15pm.
