The One Hour Plays (Matey Institute)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

The One Hour Plays sees a new ten-minute production being scripted on stage each day by a gypsy comedy troupe. The energetic director, Brendan, gathers audience suggestions for all aspects of the play including genre, era, character names and occupations. It’s a clever concept and the logistics behind the show are fantastic; costumes are made on stage, and props are constructed by the audience, who also select the musical score. Sadly, it all seemed to drag a bit, as the first fifty minutes were taken up with establishing what would happen in the final ten minutes, and the actual ten minute play was rushed through, and therefore nonsensical. It’s a shame to see such a great idea translated into a broadly mediocre production.
