The Great Big Comedy Picnic – Free (Ian Fox in association with The Laughing Horse Free Festival)

By | Published on Saturday 11 August 2012

Citing first-day syndrome for a half-hearted performance is a pretty unconvincing defence of a poor show. Ian Fox compères the Great Big Comedy Picnic, with a set from Craig Shaynak (actually filling in for Ashley Frieze), and a guest slot, filled by Alfie Moore on this occasion. The show was completely uninspiring and unpolished, marked by undeveloped material and deadpan indifference, creating a chasm of social awkwardness for the audience. Shaynak showed the most comic promise with his unabashed enthusiasm, identification with the Scottish deep-fried food culture and his ability to improvise with the French-speaking front row. However, for the most part this was uncomfortable, with tentative and aimless audience interaction and the show ending prematurely because the comics were struggling.

Laughing Horse @ Espionage, 3-26 Aug, 5.00pm.
