Stu And Garry In The Lunchtime Show (Stuart Murphy And Garry Dobson / The Assembly Rooms)
By Olivia Sleet | Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012
You have to admire Stu and Garry – this is improvisation at its spontaneous, daunting best. The pair spend an hour doing sketches based on the topical whims of the audience; we shout aloud suggestions of people, places, themes, and the two comedians turn their deftly accomplished hands to every request. It is immediately clear these two are well-established in their act and the audience relax into the safe and comfortable routines. The trouble with the set is that their quick-thinking antics are impressive, but not actually that funny; the jokes are basic, blunt and a bit heavy-handed, and the best they get out of the crowd is a few titters. Admire, yes – but laugh, maybe not.
The Assembly Rooms, 2-26 Aug (not 13), 12.15pm.
