‘Songs, Stories And Downright Lies’ does exactly what it says on the tin; Dennis Alexander’s mixture of traditional Scottish ditties, poems and alternative versions of Scottish historical events blend into an incredibly fun and entertaining fifty minutes. Kilt-clad and with a mischievous glint in his eye, Alexander is the perfect host to lead the audience through this journey into Scottish history, covering everything from Kilmarnock’s answer to ‘Mamma Mia!’, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Paolo Nutini, all with that trademark Scottish self-deprecation. It’s not just humour that Alexander does well, his rendition of the ballad of the Massacre of Glencoe is simply beautiful. Although tourists may initially struggle to understand some bits, they’re soon singing along with everyone else.
