So You Think You’re Funny? (Gilded Balloon / sponsored by Fosters)
By Joseph Fleming | Published on Wednesday 15 August 2012
Entering ‘So You Think You’re Funny?’ is a right of passage for any fledgling comic. It would seem that almost every major stand-up in the kingdom was a finalist in this competition during their youth, with previous winners including Peter Kay, Lee Mack, and Dylan Moran. Tonight’s preliminary heat was a fairly disappointing affair, since only a quarter of the acts on the bill showed notable promise. The two diamonds in the rough were the deadpan Paul Jones, who possessed an array of marvellously constructed one-liners, and the sparkling Aisling Bea, whom you may recognise from BBC3’s ‘Dead Boss’. My advice would be to postpone seeing ‘SYTYF?’ until the final on 23 Aug. There is far too much chaff to separate in the meantime.
