Occupied (Amy Wright)

Having ”occupied” a living room in an Edinburgh guest house (in the conventional sense rather than as a political statement), Amy Wright goes down the established Fringe route of using a wacky venue in this rather off-beat show. And though ‘Occupied’ is intriguing in its venue choice, it is not so entertaining in content. Former school teacher Wright presents a persona that is akin to Andy Kaufman’s Foreign Man, where jokes, poetry, and short stories appear to be made deliberately unfunny, and for some, Wright’s egregiously humourless jokes and tales may produce hysterics, especially in those that are partial to schadenfreude. An inspired suggestion to replace CVs with a person’s Google search history showed potential but ultimately failed to rescue the performance from inducing excruciating ennui.
