No Country For Old Men (Old Pamphleteers / Scottish Comedy Festival)

With so much stand-up at the Fringe, not every show is going to be as innovative as the performers might like. ‘No Country For Old Men’ is one such example. Likeable compère Les Sinclair relied too heavily on old national stereotypes, searching somewhat aimlessly in the crowd for someone more exotic than a man from Dundee. John Purves followed with a hit-and-miss barrage of puns and one-liners, his whimsical style making up for his slightly inflexible delivery. Final comic Rod Hunter was probably the most up-to-date in his references, but these came with unfunny jokes about paedophilia and clichéd lines about parenting. It’s fairly predictable material, delivered quite well, for an over-30s crowd.
