Monkey Poet – Potty Mouth (Monkey Poet / Makin Projects / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Sarah Richardson | Published on Wednesday 15 August 2012
According to Monkey Poet, “The true poet doesn’t say azure, he says blue”. This straight-talking approach is one that the Mancunian clearly lives by – using his act to attack most of the things he hates (mainly religion and the Tory party) in graphic terms. Whether it’s poetic is debatable, but it’s certainly crude: the description, complete with actions, of how he would “hate bum George Osborne” is a particular low, whatever your opinion of the chancellor. When steered towards slightly more palatable ground the performance has its clever moments, and some of the conclusions to the poet’s pieces are genuinely funny. Ultimately, however, this is more angry manifesto than comedy, and those looking for laughs could well be disappointed.
The Banshee Labyrinth, 4-25 Aug (not 14th), 5.10pm.
