Michael Workman – Mercy (Token)
Sometimes a performance comes along to restore your faith in a type of show; I’d had it up to here with one man (or woman) shows when I saw Michael Workman. Although listed in the comedy section it far exceeded that. This was funny, yes, but also theatrical, musical, factual and filled with songs, charming hand-drawn projections and cabbages. Workman tells this story of a man’s defiance against Castro’s rule in a measured, mellow, gorgeous voice, with the sort of jokes that make you realise the rug is suddenly no longer beneath your feet. While perhaps not for everyone (especially if you prefer Phil Collins over Peter Gabriel), it brings a reflective mood to comedy.
