Man 1, Bank 0 (Patrick Combs)
By Joseph Trotter | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
The story of Patrick Combs cashing a scam check for $99, 093. 35 was, as he freely admits, very heavily reported in the mid-90s and has continued to be a ‘suck-it-to-em’ fable ever since. As such, one must ask what reason there is to flog the tale once again, this time in the form of a comedy show. There is no reason, nor is there much comedy, despite the fact that its listed as such. Sure, Combs is an enthusiastic story-teller, and his story is really quite something. But that’s all it is, a story, and it takes more than that to make a comedy show: in more skilled hands, it might conceivably have been worked into something worth performing, but ‘Man 1, Bank 0’ adds nothing that has not already been stated by Combs; much like cashing another fake check really.
