ED2012 2/5 Reviews ED2012 Comedy Reviews
Jem Brookes – Thumbs Up – Free (Jem Brookes / Laughing Horse Free Festival)
By Anna McDonald | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Jem Brookes puts on a display of good old fashioned comedy, packed full of puns, wordplay and simple jokey jokes; the atmosphere he generates is initially nice, it feels a bit like some friends have simply gathered for an afternoon of drinking, a mood furthered by Brookes encouraging everyone to visit the bar. The problem, though, is that the jokes just aren’t all that funny; and the comedian struggles to judge the mood of his audience so that one-liners are met solely with polite titters and groans. The show lacks flow, energy and drive, and as congenial as the pub-time atmosphere might feel at the start, that alone is not enough, and the audience soon seems rather bored of it all.
