Jack Barry And Patrick Turpin – Your New Mild Friends (Barry / Turpin / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Holly Close | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
‘Your New Mild Friends’ is a confident double-handler from two quite different young performers. Jack Barry provided likeable anecdotes and interesting vending machine-based trivia, getting to know the audience in a pleasingly non-confrontational way. His inexperience does show through a little though; his material doesn’t really flow from story to story, making the set feel more like a series of ideas than anything coherent. The apparently more experienced Patrick Turpin combined props, PowerPoint and jokes to surreal effect, his well-crafted awkwardness pulling together parties, fried chicken and the difference between pubs and inns. Though Turpin’s style does take a little while to adjust to, overall it’s a nicely contrasting show with plenty of comic potential.
