It’s Grimm Up North (Hardbody Productions)

This animated comedy (actually animated, as in, a cartoon) follows the unusual inhabitants of a fictional Northern town. The first of two episodes focuses on evil supermarket owner Gideon Gold who has locked his daughter in isolation to do his taxes and accounts. The clever use of inspiration from Rapunzel works well, and the dialogue makes some witty references to fairy-tale clichés, while the animation is dark and a bit sleazy but establishes the cheerless tone of the story very well. However, the second episode about a seedy hairdresser is simply crass, and has none of the cleverness of the first episode. Overall, it’s a strange concept, and it doesn’t quite work. It feels a bit like turning up at a venue just to watch a bit of telly.
