Henry Rollins (Regular Music And MZA)
By Alice Taylor | Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012
Have I just witnessed a fascinating history lesson, a hugely entertaining performance of stand-up comedy, or an intimate, deep, meaningful chat? Henry Rollins is a storyteller with a purpose, cleverly weaving comedy into his presented stream-of-consciousness, resisting the conventional stand-up structure of a disjointed series of short jokes. He relates stories of his own life, and the comic elements naturally reveal themselves, giving the show an organic flow, as well as a sense of spontaneity. His intellectual material is fascinating, yet never flies over the heads of his audience. There is something incredibly engaging and even endearing about this big, heavily-tattooed man, his passion for the world and its constant striving to improve. Utterly mesmerising; I completely forgot the rest of the audience was there.
The Queen’s Hall, 10 Aug, 7.00pm.
