DeAnne Smith – Livin’ The Sweet Life (DeAnne Smith)
By Joe Mountford-Smith | Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012
DeAnne Smith blends together deadpan, musical and dark comedy in this anecdotal stand-up set which conveys her attempt at gaining a new (glass half-full) outlook on life. The act opens with a song played on her ukulele; a mostly jolly melody that has a melancholic twist – this resonates with the rest of the show. Her content is personal and often sexual; she jokes about being a lesbian, coming out to her parents, becoming familiar with porn and her love of oral sex. Though her act was charming and alluring to begin with, I felt myself losing interest as it went on, though I was jolted back to higher levels of appreciation at the grand finale. Funny but not hilarious.
