Darkness Rising (Heretical Productions)

Silly. Imaginative. Hilarious. Three ways to describe the brilliant progressive sketch-theatre of the talented comedic foursome behind ‘Darkness Rising’. Featuring some ingenious characters (the bad-ass priest being my personal favourite) and inventive scene progressions (using the actors for scenery and furniture), the show was an engaging and entertaining spectacle from start to finish. The cast were fantastic to a man, whilst the narrative of cult-based murders was both silly and interesting, keeping the character sketches fresh and engaging. Likewise, the inclusion of a versatile if under-appreciated live musician added much to the atmosphere and effect, as did a creative use of lighting and space. It’s too late for this year, but these boys could be a big hit next festival.
