Cucu-rucu-cu In The French Alps (Marie Connolly)
By Jo Barrow | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
I think Marie Connolly was genuinely astounded that she couldn’t find a single skier in the audience of her free show. Surely, she must have thought, skiing is a safe bet for a hobby of the average fringe-goer? Apparently not. As a result she had to cut her show down to just 25 minutes, in order to find jokes that her audience could relate to, and therein lies her problem. I think comedy should be universal, not subject specific, and while Marie was friendly, confident and chatty, laughs were thin on the ground in her entirely anecdotal show about her five ski seasons in France. Good for a dinner party conversation perhaps, but not quite so good as stand-up.
