Bobby Carroll – Low Voltage – Free (Bobby Carroll / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Monday 20 August 2012

As time ticked (slowly) by in this performance, Bobby Carroll merely proved to his audience that desperation isn’t funny. Carroll began well, with an introduction that showed he does have some comic talent. But he distracted us from this by focusing intently on those who weren’t laughing. He wanted to win them over, but simply criticised them- not the most efficient way of making someone like you! When this only invoked awkward silences, Carroll tried bringing in taboo subjects for the shock factor. But by this point he’d lost half the audience and so detailing his sex life really didn’t improve the atmosphere. This was a frustrating performance from a genuinely funny guy, who ruined it for himself.
