Bob Downe…Smokin’ (Phil McIntyre Entertainments)
By Mara Docherty | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
If they were to do an archaeological dig of the old Gilded Balloon they would definitely find a disco neckerchief or two belonging to Bob Downe; such is his longevity. ”This is my sixteenth Fringe – your hair is getting greyer”, Bob quips at the audience, while his Pan’s People dancing, songs and camp chat seem to target a more nostalgic viewer. Downe shines in his musical numbers, including ‘Daydream Believer’ and ‘Land Down Under’ (although the comic slurring did grate), which were accompanied by clapping and arm swaying from the crowd. Unfortunately, the conversational filler was smouldering at best, showing the odd crackle, but never really catching fire. Despite his ”Bob Beiber hair”, Downe would max out a golden oldies disco party.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, 1-26 Aug (not 14, 23), 8.00pm.
