The Maroon Balloon (Smash Productions)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This production, inspired by Albert Lamorisse’s 1956 film of ‘The Red Balloon’, had children fascinated as soon as they entered the room. Carnival-like accordion music created a lively Parisian atmosphere and the three performers, already in character, reflected the protagonist’s boredom as they sighed, yawned and stretched while audience members sat down. The story follows a bored boy who befriends a balloon and the adventures they have through the city. At times it was confusing and would have benefited from a more consistent narrative voice. That said, the enthusiasm and liveliness from these great young actresses made for an entertaining show as they mimed, sung and danced their way through Paris. The kids certainly enjoyed it.
