Mickey And Judy (Michael Hughes)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
An autobiographical cabaret, Michael Hughes’s ‘Mickey and Judy’ gets away with retreading familiar tropes by doing it well. Growing up in Canada, Hughes faced the common problems that come with being flamboyant, and he tells his story, illustrating it with musical classics, all very, very well sung. Hughes is funny, charming and naively cynical without being unrealistic; In other words, a perfect character to root for. The only problem with the show was that few of the lead-ins to the songs were slightly awkward, but this sort of thing is almost unavoidable with this kind of show. In any case, if awkwardness was the price for getting a great spoken and singing performance, then it’s worth it. Plus, any show which invites the audience to sing-along for a few numbers is automatically wonderful.
