James Tait Black Prize (Edinburgh International Book Festival / University of Edinburgh)

Established in 1919, the James Tait Black Prizes are presented every year for the best in fiction and biography, as decided by postgraduate students and senior staff at Edinburgh University’s English Literature department. Biography winner Fiona McCarthy’s ‘The Last Pre-Raphaelite’ was praised for managing to get one of the judges to think anew about the period. Padgett Powell’s ‘You and I’, a stream of dialogue between two unnamed speakers, took first prize in fiction. And it was nice to hear that this year the University of Edinburgh has put its money where its mouth is, not only with the awards of £10,000 to the winners, but also by printing a copy of ‘You And I’ for every fresher.
