Woyzeck (Theatre Oikos)
By Veronika Kallus | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
This gifted ensemble brings Woyzeck to life. In a play that is almost too deep, too many-layered to be adequately put to the stage, Franz Woyzeck, a simple man, struggles against the authorities, against his superiors, and against his love. Society brings him to fall, makes him a killer, and inevitably kills him. A much-needed, appreciated and poignant narrator guides through the play, untangles various strands of action and helps through the complexity of the original script. The plain stage accompanies the anti-hero’s simplicity. A most complicated character, Woyzeck is portrayed very aptly by Benny Ainsworth, and the rest of the group also do the script justice. It is not light and easy entertainment, but well worth seeing.
Zoo, 5 – 13 Aug, 5.30pm (6.30pm), £7.00 – £5.00, fpp313.
