Us And Them (Grim’s Theatre Company)
By Taylor Wallace | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Two groups of wanderers stumble upon the same patch of land. First they draw lines, then they build fences and walls. With nothing left to do but wonder what is happening on the other side, violence is inevitable. A ‘recorder’ narrates the tale, hoping one day someone will learn from the bloody history that is constantly repeating itself. For a group of girls all heading into sixth form at Havelock Academy, this is an impressive piece of flash drama. The metaphors abound, and it’s hard not to see the correlation between these two quirky groups and our everlasting obsession with warfare. A thirty-minute gem of a piece, performed with humbleness and flare that many professionals at the Fringe are lacking.
