Travelers: A Comedy With Music (American High School Theatre Festival)

Besides the well-managed scene changes and a competent performance from Lauren Watts, there is little to recommend in this overly long and trivial play. Using a time-machine as a means to perform three short plays in different time periods, the play comes across as piecemeal and without a purpose. The three stories, set in 1905, 1935 and 1955, are seemingly chosen at random, as there is nothing meaningful done with the setting; they even fail to offer any reflection on the main character’s love story. Hackneyed and clichéd, the stories played like a bad episode of ‘Quantum Leap’ – which was far from good television, in my opinion. The songs did little to lighten the mood, as few of the cast could sing. Avoid this play.

Church Hill Theatre, 19 – 22 Aug, times vary, £5.00, fpp306.
