Trainspotting (Spud Theatre)
By Lucinda Dobinson | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Despite my own personal issues with the gratuitous horribleness of Irvine Welsh’s tale, I was gripped by this production. Superb acting and minimalist staging made these characters disturbingly real; at times I found myself watching through my hands, and I was very grateful not to be in the front row, thus being that bit further away from the leeringly aggressive character, Franco Begbie. I still fail to understand why anyone would want to subject themselves to such unrelenting misery, but the cult following that surrounds ‘Trainspotting’ shows that I am in the minority here, and if this is your cup of tea, I can’t recommend a better way to see it: uncomfortable, visceral, raw, gritty and distressingly real.
Gryphon Venues at The Point Hotel, 15 – 20 Aug, 8.30pm (9.50pm), £7.50 – £8.50, fpp306.
