ED2011 1/5 Reviews ED2011 Theatre Reviews
The Rivals (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Alice Longhurst | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
At the premiere of Sheridan’s first play in 1775, an apple was lobbed at an actor in protest, prompting him to ask, “Is it me or the matter?” Tragically, this production encourages a similar response. Sheridan’s clever wit is massacred by the appalling acoustics of the venue and the inexperience of the cast. Most deliver their lines with a speed which completely suffocates all traces of humour and meaning. Having said that, however, Captain Absolute is played with considerable skill, while maid Lucy is perfectly cast to carry off the scheming humbleness required. There is potential here; a better venue and a little more confidence from the cast could produce a more enjoyable revival of this classic comedy.
Church Hill Theatre, 9 – 13 Aug (not 11), times vary, £5.00, fpp293.
