The Crucible (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

American High School fail to do justice to Miller’s great American play, bringing a bland student production to Leith. The troupe attempt to transpose the show into a present-day setting, but the few modern props seem laughably anachronistic in a Salem never defined as contemporary. Giles Corey (Brock Burczyk) brought some unexpected yet well-received comic relief, but not enough to save the show. Scenes in the court were staged interestingly, with actors sitting amongst the audience. Unfortunately, the lighting designer didn’t keep up, as the trial scene happened in the dark. That said, it is always a pleasure to see young actors enjoying themselves on stage; perhaps they will return next year with a more realistic project.
