Tales From Edgar Allan Poe (Backhand Theatre in association with C Theatre)
By Eleanor Pender | Published on Saturday 27 August 2011
If you have never read Edgar Allan Poe, attend this show if you dare. The small cast of four bring this short-story writer’s Gothic works to life in the most spine-chilling fashion. Within moments of entering the room, I was entranced by the eloquent delivery of speech that pulled me ever so slowly into the dark and sinister world Backhand Theatre had created. High black walls, black capes and a handful of props are used in this expertly directed minimalist performance. Real enchantment lies in the mesmerisingly performed monologues; Natasha Vieira as the Visitor in ‘The House of Usher’ delivered the story exceptionally well. ‘Tales From Edgar Allan Poe’ is an absolutely terrifying, eerily beautiful production.
