Suddenly Shakespeare (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

‘Suddenly Shakespeare’ comically tells four of Shakespeare’s best-known plays with some quirky new features. Featuring ‘The Tempest’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Twelfth Night’, this piece explores the vast array of themes seen within the plays and re-creates them with a slight modern twist – this ‘Romeo and Juliet’ features cowboys. With some very amusing parts and a particularly good telling of ‘Macbeth’ (also featuring some humorous attempts at a Scottish accent), this production is both clever and well-executed, and the cast demonstrate their versatility as they switch between comedic enactments to the more haunting Shakespearian tales. ‘Suddenly Shakespeare’ is entertaining and a good introduction to Shakespeare for the younger audience members, and a show that can only improve with time.
