Satellites (Awful Pie Theatre)
By Thea Warren | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
This ambitious adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s ‘Women in Love’ explores the transcendent possibilities of love. Comic moments, elegant set-pieces and excellent costumes and music elevate a rather choppy script which the cast occasionally struggle to realise through performance. Nonetheless, Ella Thackray gives a nuanced Ursula Brangwen, whilst Fiona Guest adapts ably to a variety of roles. The piece is at its best when Lawrence’s prose is allowed to breathe, but there is little time to linger on motifs and arguments as the adaptation races through the plot in episodic fashion. Awkward direction of the on-stage action often cannot match the elegance of the language and subtleties of character, but such a complex piece rewards an attentive audience.
